EARLY last month, the parents of a British schoolgirl who committed suicide after being bullied on a social networking site (SNS) called for better monitoring of such online meeting places.

Megan Gillan, 15, was one of the UK's 9 million users of Bebo, a website similar to Facebook and the Chinese equivalent Kaixin. She took her own life by swallowing painkillers after some girls left spiteful messages regarding her clothes and appearance. Archbishop Vincent Nichols, head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, spoke out in several national newspapers claiming Facebook and MySpace could lead children to commit suicide. "They throw themselves into a friendship or network of friendships, then it collapses and they're desolate," Nichols said.
